Man, oh man, was it satisfying to eat a salad with lettuce from our very own small, improved-from-last-year-but-still-experimental garden. Never mind that Wegmans supplied the cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, peppers, onions, seeds and pine nuts. But the lettuce, oh the lettuce! I wonder if real farmers feel this self righteous every time they harvest and eat something... Incidentally, we have also been self-righteously enjoying a batch of homemade pesto courtesy of our flourishing basil plants.

the first crop
