- 7 planes
- millions of taxis, all driving like maniacs
- delicious meals ... and some not-so-delicious (fish "cooked" in lemon juice, aka marinated for 10 minutes)
- interesting people (like Vincent the Belgian airline pilot and Gerhard the retired German school teacher)
- new friends (Steve & Debi the missionaries, Monica & Vlado our hosts, Marlen, and Katy & Jaime and their two cute kids)
- 3 places checked off in our "1,000 Places to See Before You Die" book, including Santa Catalina monastery, the city of Cusco, and of course Macchu Piccu
- a couple of group bus tours that made us feel like full-on turistas
- opportunities to practice our Spanish
- 5 days in a city at 7,500 feet above sea level and 2 days in a city at 11,500 feet above sea level
- the unique experience of being guests in people's homes and getting an insider's view of life in Peru
